ouglass “Doug” Buell Herring, 93, an 8 year resident of the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, MD and previously of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis, MD for 17 years, died on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 of natural causes after a brief illness. Born August 3, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Douglass and Helen Buell Herring, he was raised in Flushing, NY and graduated from Jamaica (NY) High School in 1937. Doug was employed as a salesman at the Gray Envelope Company from 1948-1977 and as an investment product marketer at Columbia Savings and Loan from 1977 until his retirement in 1981. He was a private in the United States Army during WWII with the 82nd Airborne Division in the European Theatre and participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Wöbbelin concentration camp. Doug was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis, MD, the Chapel at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, MD and the Harbour Squares in Heritage Harbour, Annapolis, MD. He liked to travel, square dance, visit his granddaughters, and had an abiding love of steam-driven trains. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Evelyn (nee Gooch) Herring in April of 2006, and by a younger brother, Richard, who died in infancy in 1924. Doug is survived by one son, Richard Douglass Herring of Edison, NJ; one daughter, Lynne Herring Landrey of Wilmington, DE; and two granddaughters, Corinne and Janine Landrey. Friends are invited to Doug’s Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Sunday, December 11th, from 2 PM to 4 PM. Visitation will also be available on Monday, December 12th beginning at 10:30 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Charlestown Retirement Community, Catonsville, MD. Interment will occur at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Doug may be made to Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve, P.O. Box 61, Yorklyn, DE 19736.
