Dr. George L. Brode - Obituary

r. George Lewis Brode II, 86, a resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis, MD, passed away peacefully at his home on January 2, 2021. He was born on July 11, 1934 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Anna Marie and George Lewis Brode I. After graduating from Philadelphia’s Northeast High School in 1956, George received a Senatorial Scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a Bachelors degree in 1956 followed by a PhD in 1960, both in chemistry. George joined Union Carbide in New Jersey as a research chemist in 1960. In 1979, he became a Senior Corporate Fellow and Chairman of the Corporate Fellow Organization and, in 1988, was selected to become Union Carbide’s Promedics Director. While at Union Carbide, George was featured in the 1985 edition of American Men and Women of Science. George joined Integra Life Sciences in 1994 and received the Integra Distinguished Fellow award that same year. Among his many accomplishments, George held 55 U.S. patents, authored articles in 29 publications and accepted numerous invitations to make presentations across the United States and Internationally. He was also one of the inventors of Biopatch. He was listed in the 1997 edition of Who’s Who in American Inventors and in the 2000 edition of Who’s Who in Polymer Science. George’s alma mater, Northeast High School, selected him to receive its 2004 Wall of Fame Award. In 2011, he was recognized for his 50-year membership in the American Chemical Society. George was also recognized as a visiting scientist at Rutgers University, Principal Investigator at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Principal Investigator at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. George was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed gardening and photography and was an active in the Green Acres Committee in New Jersey. George was a charter member of Bridgewater United Methodist Church in New Jersey where he was the Building Committee chairman. After moving to Maryland in 2006, George became a member of Davidsonville United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his only brother, Robert. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lois Patricia Brode; his son, Lew (Gabriella) Brode III of Sandy Spring, MD; and two daughters, Karen (Ed) Longo of Davidsonville, MD and Lynda (Ed) Hall of Harwood, MD. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Kacie and Kelly Longo, Arielle, Dane and Noah Hall, and Tyler, Carter, Natalie and Brayden Brode. A celebration of George’s life will be held once we can safely gather again (anticipated to be July 11, 2021 at Davidsonville United Methodist Church, details to be provided closer to the date).
