Dr. Joseph B. Aviles - Obituary

r. Joseph B. Aviles, Jr., 93, of Ft. Washington, MD passed away on December 18, 2020. Born on August 21, 1927 in Atlantic City, NJ to the late Joseph B. Aviles, Sr., and Florence Powell. As the son of a Coast Guard Officer, he lived in many places. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen. His son, Joseph III and his wife Wilda. His daughter Karen, and her husband Tom Rauner. Grandchildren, Nikolay (deceased), Joseph IV, Vlada and James. After serving in the Army in Okinawa, he pursued his studies in Nuclear Physics. He obtained a BS at Rutgers, his Master’s at the University of New Hampshire and his PhD from John Hopkins. Dr. Aviles retired from NRL as a Research Nuclear Physicist and Senior Staff Scientist. After retiring he became Chief Scientist at Urie Systems, as well as a consultant for many other companies and with scientists at various universities. A Mass of Christian Burial will be restricted to immediate family. A Celebration of his Life will be held as soon as Pandemic conditions safely permit.
