Dr. Richard Alan Farson - Obituary

I

t is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Richard Alan Farson, a beloved family physician and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who departed peacefully at home on November 15, 2023, surrounded by his family, friends and adoring caretaker. Born on October 30, 1932, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and raised in North Philadelphia, Alan heard the call to pursue a career in medicine at the early age of 10. He attended Temple University and Antioch College of Ohio for his undergraduate studies, entered Hahnemann Medical College and graduated with his Doctor of Medicine in 1959. Upon graduation, he was awarded a medical internship in the US Army where he served faithfully beginning in 1959 and culminated his service as Captain in 1964. Following his Army career, Alan began private practice in Marlow Heights, MD and moved to Fort Washington, MD and finally to Waldorf, MD at the end of his career. He also served the Southern Maryland Hosptial community for over 30 years. His commitment to his profession was unparalleled and his expertise and unwavering dedication earned him the ultimate respect and admiration of both colleagues and patients alike. Known for his gentle bedside manner and empathetic approach, he was the definition of physician, a true healer, whose tireless efforts to improve the life of others will forever be remembered. Beyond his medical practice, Alan found solace and strength in his faith and his church community. He was an active member of Oxon Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and sang in the church choir. Alan’s faith was a guiding light that he shared with everyone that he encountered. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, faith, and dedication and while his professional and spiritual endeavors were of great importance to him, Alan's greatest joy came from his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Ann and a loving father to Sandy, David, Rick, Lori and Mike. Whether it was attending school events, going on family vacations or sitting around the dinner table, Alan's love was ever-present. Alan was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Dorothy (Dekyne) Farson. Alan is survived by his wife Ann C. Farson; his children Sandra Farson Polanco (Robert), David Farson (Karen), Richard Farson, Jr. (Helen), Lori Clow (Angela Sams), Michael Clow; grandchildren Richard Salinas (Zulma), Jennifer Salinas, Sarah Farson-Shiraz (Joe), Mary Farson, Tyler Farson, and Brett Farson; and great grandchildren Jaida Guevara, Justin Salinas, John Pablo Guevara, Jason Salinas, Jazmin Salinas, Jacey Salinas, Jalia Salinas, and Jexica Salinas; and his four-legged friend, dog Sofi. The family will receive visitors from 3pm-6pm on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Kalas Funeral Home located at 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill Maryland 20745, followed by a church service beginning 7pm at Oxon Hill Baptist Church located at 6633 St. Barnabas Road, Oxon Hill, Maryland 20745. Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find peace in knowing that Alan's legacy of compassion, faith and love will continue to guide us and live on through the countless lives he touched. May he rest in eternal peace with his Lord. Until we meet again. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either: American Cancer Society or The Cancer Research Institute
