dmund Joseph "Ed" Gutowski, 86, a resident of Annapolis for 20 years and formerly of Rockville, died Sept. 8 at home.

Born Feb. 1, 1921, in East Hampton, Mass., Mr. Gutowski graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy in 1943 with a degree in marine engineering.
Mr. Gutowski worked for the Navy Department and retired as a commander after 24 years of service. In 1983 he began GMT, Inc., an engineering and consulting company. He was a member of the Association of Senior Engineers and the American Society of Naval Engineers.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Gutowski; two daughters, Linda Lopez of Orlando, Fla., and Patricia Lance of Denver; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. John Newmann Catholic Church, 620 North Bestgate Road in Annapolis. Burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
