dward (Bill) G.U. Band Bill Band, 82, died June 4th at Mandrin Hospice House in Harwood, MD, of stroke related complications after a brief illness. He was an 8 year resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis. Born in Brentford, England, on May 13th, 1926, he spent six years as a student at Christ Hospital Boys' School, received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College of Science and Technology in London and received his Masters of Science at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, through a Marshall Aid Scholarship. In his youth, he was an avid cricket player, playing for Christ's Hospital and the Chilean National Test Team as well as being a rugby player. During his years as a resident of Linstead in Severna Park, he was the proud skipper of "Gunner", winning many sail races. One of the founders of the Round Bay Sailing Association, he was also commodore of the Midget Ocean Racing Club and briefly president of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association. After working in Toronto in 1952, he returned to England and Saunders Roe, Ltd. on the Isle of Wight, followed by employment at Martin Aircraft in Baltimore. In 1958, he moved to Chile taking a position as professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria in Valparaiso, Chile, where he also was President of the Flying Club. In 1964, he returned to the US as Professor of Research at Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, on Long Island. Subsequently, he moved to the D.C. area, working for Booze Allen Applied Research, Wyle Labs (Payne Division), Westinghouse Oceanic, and Payne, Inc. In 1977, with partner, David Lavis, he founded Band, Lavis & Associates, doing research for the government in the field of advanced marine vehicles, including surface-effect ships. In 1992 he retired as president of BLA. His memberships include Fellow of the Hovercraft Society, the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. He belonged to the International Ships Structure Committee which took him to meetings around the world. He married his first wife, Rosa Maria Schmidt, in Mexico in 1951. Surviving are his present wife, Kerstin (Kitt) Band, and children; Jean Alan Band of Cape St. Claire, MD; Rosalinda Band of Xalapa, Mexico; William Band of Reno, Nevada; Christina Band de Aceves of La Paz, Mexico; Jennifer Band of New York, NY and Ian McNeill of Odenton, MD. Also survived by five grandchildren and one great grand-daughter. Beloved brother of Alan Band of Faversham, England and Jo Mancey of Morpeth, England. A memorial service will be held at Gloria Dei!
