Feb 10, 1942 - Sep 2, 2016
dward “Ed” Carroll Welton, 74, on the evening of September 2, 2016, Ed passed away, attended and comforted by his wife and son, at Queen Anne’s Emergency Center in Queenstown, MD as a result of cardiac arrest. Born in Washington, D.C. on February 10, 1942, Ed was the only child of June Ellen Turner and Edward Norflet Welton. He grew up on Pope Street in Southeast Washington, D.C. surrounded by beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He attended Randle Highlands Elementary School, John Philip Sousa Junior High School and graduated from Anacostia High School in 1961. Ed started in the construction industry right out of high school as a sheet metal apprentice with the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association Local Union #100. A metal craftsmen of the highest caliber, Ed knew something about all of the construction trades and used that knowledge to build beautiful homes for himself and his family. A perfectionist who believed in working slowly and redoing a job if it wasn’t right, he maintained a constant curiosity about making things by hand. A lifetime passion for drag racing began early and Ed found himself most at home at his workbench, in the garage, or at the junk yard. Although he did all types of fabrication for his friends who were drag racers, he thought the flathead Ford made for a good hot rod. Like most hot rodders who dream of owning that one car one day, his dream was the ’32 Ford. “Mr. Sheet Metal” was wished much good luck by his co-workers when in 2004 he retired from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. following 25 years of loyal service to the Government of the United States of America. Ed’s retirement brought him over a decade of happiness so justly deserved after years of faithful service. Married for 53 years, Ed and his wife Judy shared love, honor and comfort in each other’s company. Ed was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife, Judy Arline Moos Welton; son, Louis Edward Welton; daughter, Kristin Sue Welton Eshelman; daughter-in-law, Sheila Anne Mooney Welton; son-in-law, Nicholas Eshelman; grandson, Emil Louis Welton and granddaughter Kathleen “Kallie” Christina Welton. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, September 24 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD.
