dwin V. Wells, Jr. was born in Upper Marlboro on September 28, 1923. He died peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 12, 2014. His beloved wife, Jane, preceded him in death. He is survived by his three children: Mary K. Vass (Sam), Ronald Wells (Kathryn), Patricia Barrett (Bill), seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. When Ed graduated from Marlboro H.S. he was president of his class and received an award as the best all around senior. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in December, 1942. He served in the Pacific theater and was released from active duty as a 1st Lieutenant. He stayed in the inactive reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Ed began a career with the Air Force in 1946 in the civilian personnel division. At Air Force Headquarters he served in progressively responsible positions. In 1981 he retired as Chief of the Staffing and Employment Development Division. In this position he was responsible for planning and directing the development of policies and standards for the Department’s employment and career management programs. He also served as a member of the Department’s Security Hearing Board and the Air Force Board for the Correction of Military Records. He twice received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the Chief of Staff and when he retired he received the Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service from the Secretary of the Air Force. Ed earned a degree in commercial science, cum laude, from Strayer’s Business College. After retirement from his civilian position with the Air Force he joined H&R Block as a tax preparer. After serving 3 years as an office manager, he became self employed in tax preparation for many years. Mr. Wells was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Mary’s parish in Annapolis. In his former parish, St Bernadine’s in Suitland, MD, he served as a lector and as president of the Parish Advisory Council. Ed enjoyed family, friends, travel, swimming, gardening, golf, and bridge. A public viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 15 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 16 at 9am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Rd., Annapolis. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton.
