lizabeth “Liz” Pauline Atkins, 97, a 6-month resident at The Annapolitan Assisted Living facility and previously a resident of Edgewater, MD, Daytona Beach, Florida, and Washington, D.C., died on January 20, 2012 after a one month illness. Born August 19, 1914 in Petersburg, VA, she was a 1931 graduate of Hopewell High School in Hopewell, VA. Liz was employed at the Hecht Co. from 1943-53 in the Patterns and Notions Dept.; at Catholic University as a secretary for the Architecture Dept. Head from 1953-64; and for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, MD from 1964-77. Her hobbies included playing cards, dancing, reading, sewing, painting, crocheting, knitting, and quilting. She was awarded blue ribbons for several of her quilts as the county fair in Volusia County, Florida. Liz was preceded in death by her husband of 77 years, Lewis S. Atkins, on April 5, 2010; a daughter, Jean Parise on May 8, 2005; two brothers, Wilson and William Mifka; and two sisters, Louise Smith and Helen McClenny. She is survived by a son, Rudy Atkins of Laurel, DE; two daughters, Phyllis Wilson of Montgomery, AL and Betty Curro of Edgewater, MD; 13 grandchildren, Chris Curro of Silver Spring, MD, David Parise of Annapolis, MD, Stephen Curro of Riva, MD, Rudy Adkins, Jr. of Laurel, DE, Edwin Wilson of Annapolis, MD, Timothy Wilson of Montgomery, AL, George Atkins of Laurel, DE, Vicki Galyen of Fredericksburg, VA, Lisa Boatman of Deale, MD, Karen Price of Melbourne, FL, Darlene Matthes of Laurel, DE, Jessica Belcher of Montgomery, AL and Camille Curro of Arnold, MD; also survived by 18 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to Liz’s Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 11am until time of service at 12pm. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
