Elizabeth Essex Derwent - Obituary

lizabeth (Betty) Essex Derwent passed on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at her home in Annapolis, MD at age 95. Born and raised in Washington, DC, Betty was one of 12 children. She graduated from Eastern High School and attended the George Washington University. Betty was married in 1947 to Allen John Derwent, Jr., who predeceased her in 1988. She leaves behind their five children, Allen Derwent (Claire), Judith Corridon, Susan Calhoun, Anne Derwent (Bob Gray), and Donald Derwent (Michele). She also leaves her 10 grandchildren, Joe Derwent, John Derwent, Ben Tokarz, Carey Woodington, Adam Calhoun, Mac Gray, Ollie Gray, Lane Noe, Elle Ritt, and Francis Derwent, as well as two great grandchildren, Kayla Woodington and Christian Woodington. In addition, she leaves one brother, Richard Essex. Betty was also predeceased by her other 10 siblings and son-in-law, Charles Calhoun. Betty loved being with her family and volunteering her time to benefit others. She was extremely active throughout her life in pursuit of her many interests which included traveling, swimming, crocheting sewing, reading, acting, and writing poetry. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 beginning at 1:00 PM, followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 PM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Betty requested contributions be made to the Maryland Food Bank, 2200 Halethorpe Farms Rd, Baltimore, MD 21227 in lieu of flowers.
