llen Margaret Diehl Thompson, 90, died Monday April 18, 2016, at her home in Churchton, MD. She was born March 30, 1926, in Iowa City IA, daughter of Charles Irwin and Margaret Alla Flaherty Diehl. She graduated from Garfield High School, Terre Haute, IN in 1944. She attended Indiana State Teachers College in Terre Haute. She served in the Women's Army Corps and was honorably discharged as a Private First Class. She married Henry G. Thompson on Dec. 28, 1949, in Chittenango, NY, and was predeceased by him. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter Diane M. Thompson. Ellen played violin, clarinet, oboe and chord organ, and sang with the Annapolis Chorale. She was a life member of Order of the Eastern Star, Twelve Points Chapter, Terre Haute, IN, and co-founded the Star of Bavaria Chapter in Landsberg, Germany. She was a Girl Scout girl member and later a Girl Scout Leader. Ellen was an extra class amateur radio operator, call sign N3EMI. She was a past president of the Susquehanna County (PA) Radio Club and a Volunteer Examiner for the Anne Arundel (MD) Radio Club. She enjoyed fiber arts, including sewing, crochet, knitting, Swedish weaving and beading. She was a loyal supporter of her grandchildren’s school activities and an avid fan at their sports competitions & musical performances. She was particularly proud of her descendants’ educational accomplishments. She is survived by her daughter, Judith M. Thompson (Charles Shapiro) of Avondale Estates, GA; her son Micheal G. Thompson (Janice Longe) of Churchton; grandchildren Christine E. Mooney (Darby Miller), Harrisburg, PA; Frances T. Landon (MollyJayne), St. Louis, MO: Ryan L. Thompson, Harrisburg; Kaitlin L. Thompson, Erie, PA; and Kelvin L. Thompson, Churchton; great-grand-children Jessica P. Mooney, Harrisburg; and Devin C. Landon, St. Louis; nephews George A. Gibson (Virginia), Rochester, NY; John, Lonnie, Mike and Frank Diehl, all of Albuquerque, NM; Warren D. Thompson, Knoxville, TN; and Steven R. Thompson (Sharon), Sinking Spring, PA. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be announced later. She was a faithful patron of Deale Community Library. Memorial contributions may be made to the Anne Arundel Library Foundation.
