ugene “Pop” Bayard Walp, Sr., 82, of Annapolis, MD and Avon Park, Florida died on January 16, 2009 after a brief illness. Born, September 4, 1926 in Bridgeton, NJ, he was a graduate of Metuchen High School in Metuchen, NJ. Mr. Walp was a WWII veteran, where he was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy from 1943-47. He then later served in the U.S. Marine Corp. during the Korean Conflict from 1950-51. He was decorated with numerous medals received during his military career. He retired after 20 years with General Motors and also worked for 20 years with NSRD (North Severn) as a Research Laboratory Mechanic. He was owner of Limited Auto and Marine Repair in Annapolis, MD. Eugene was a teacher at the Manpower Training Center for the federal government in Annapolis, MD. His memberships included, the Fleet Reserve Association in Annapolis, Marine Corp. League, Crownsville American Legion Post 226, he was a master mason with the Masonic temple in Metuchen, NJ, a member of the National Order of “Trench Rats” (which is an affiliate of the D.A.V.). He was also a past commander of both VFW Post 304 and the L.L. Merrill Chapter of the D.A.V., both in Annapolis, MD. He was an avid bass fisherman and horseshoe player. He enjoyed family gatherings and loved his many great and great-grandchildren. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth “Betty” Ellen Walp, who died in 1992; father of Melvin Ehrhardt Walp of Utah, Linda M. McCarty of North Carolina, Sheri A. Miller, Gary R. and Eugene B. Walp, Jr., all of Annapolis, MD, Mark A. Walp of Davidsonville, MD, Brian M. Walp of Prince Frederick, MD and the late Christine A. Garris, who died in 2000; brother of Thomas Walp of California, Donald Walp of New York and the late Andrew Walp; loving and devoted companion of LaVerne Cammarata of Annapolis, MD; he is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to Mr. Walp's Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Wednesday, January 21 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 2:30pm at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, MD. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1041 Route 3 N Bldg A, Gambrills, MD 21054.
