velyn Barger died peacefully with her family at her side at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. on Monday, November 9, 2009 at age 78. Evelyn was born on December 6, 1930 in Knoxville, Tenn. She married Herbert and they were married for 61 years and she enjoyed being a military wife. She was deeply involved with her Providence-Fort Washington United Methodist Church and assisted with various church functions and activities for more than 40 years. She was always giving and putting others above herself. She was a member of the Washington D.C. Constitution Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and served that association as Registrar and Treasurer for many years. She was a collateral descendant of Thomas Jefferson and co-authored, with her husband, Herbert, the family genealogy book, “The Jefferson Family of Virginia.†Her greatest joy in life was being a wife, mother and grandma. She is survived by her husband, Herbert Barger, Fort Washington, MD. Other survivors include their four children: Linda F. Patterson, husband Jim, San Antonio, TX, Pamela A. Buell, husband Frank, Ashburn, VA, Harold L. Barger, wife Carol, Waldorf, MD, Rebecca K. Hart, husband Mike, Ashburn, VA. Her grandchildren were her most precious gems. They include 9 grandchildren, James, Justin and Jeffrey Patterson, Jessica Jones and Sarah Buell, Jennifer Johnson and Johanna Barger, and Rachel and Emily Hart. Her great-grandsons are Matthew Benny and Alexander James Patterson. She is also survived by her brother Herbert Bomar and sister Kathleen Ellis of Knoxville, TN and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. All who wish to celebrate her life may call on Thursday, November 12 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, MD. Services will be held on Friday, November 13, 11:00 a.m. at Providence-Fort Washington United Methodist Church, 10610 Old Fort Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744 with Reverend Stephen Ricketts officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations or memorial contributions may be sent to Providence-Fort Washington United Methodist Church, 10610 Old Fort Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744. A private burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
