r. William Andrew Newman, OP, A Dominican Friar, died after a brief illness at George Washington University Hospital on April 28, 2009 at age 79. Born in New Haven, Connecticut February 12, 1930, he was the son of the late Thomas and Agnes (Carroll) Newman. He received his early education in New Haven at St. Mary Elementary School and St. Mary High School. Father Newman was professed a Dominican Friar in 1951 and Ordained to the Priesthood at St. Dominic Church, Washington, DC on June 11, 1957. He received a B.A. in Latin in 1952 from Providence College (RI) and an S.T.L. and S.T.Lr. in 1958 from the Pontifical University of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, DC. He received an S.T.D. in 1970 from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. From 1958 until 1990 Father Newman had assignments in the Teaching Apostolate of the Province of St. Joseph. He began in 1958 teaching at Aquinas College High School in Columbus, Ohio and from 1960 - 66 at Siena College in Memphis, Tennessee. From 1969 - 71 he taught at Providence College in Rhode Island and 1971 - 1990 at the Pontifical University of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC where he also served as Director of Field Education for the Dominican Seminarians. Fr. Newman also spent semesters teaching at St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore in 1977 and Mt. St. Mary Seminary, Emmitsburg 1984-86 and the Angelicum University in Rome in 1980. From 1990 until 2007 Fr. Newman served as Associate Pastor at St. Dominic Parish, Washington, DC. In April 2008 due to declining health Fr. Newman began residence in the Center for Assisted Living at St. Dominic Priory in Washington, DC. Funeral arrangements by Kalas Funeral Home, Oxon Hill, for St. Dominic Church are: Reception of the Body and Liturgical Office of the Dead at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 1st. Wake following in the Church until 9:30 p.m. Wake at St. Dominic Church on Saturday Morning, May 2nd from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 2nd at St. Dominic Church, Sixth and E Streets SW. Burial following the Funeral Mass will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Father Newman's memory to the Dominican Friars Center for Assisted Living, 630 E Street SW, Washington, DC.
