Fr John Way - Obituary

r. Edmund John Way, OP, a Dominican Friar, died after a brief illness at Georgetown University Hospital on November 22, 2008 at age 93. The son of the late Arthur and Mary Margaret (Nangle) Way, he was born in Medford, Massachusetts January 11, 1915. He was raised and received his early education in Providence, Rhode Island where he attended LaSalle Academy and Providence College where he received a B.A. in 1936. He entered the Novitiate for the Order of Preachers (Dominican Friars) and was Professed in 1940. His theological education was at the Immaculate Conception Pontifical College in Washington, DC, he was Ordained a Priest on June 10, 1943. Following Ordination to the Priesthood, Fr. Way was assigned to St. Dominic Parish in Detroit, Michigan 1943-53. He became a member of the Itinerant Preaching Team of the Eastern Dominican Province and was assigned to St. Dominic Priory in Youngstown, Ohio from 1953 - 74. Fr. Way was Chaplain for a year to the Cloistered Dominican Nuns at Camden, New Jersey and in 1975 was assigned to St. Dominic Priory, Washington, DC where he remained. During his years in Washington, DC while serving in Parish Ministry at St. Dominic Parish he also served as Chaplain to the Washington Area Alumni Chapter of Providence College. Due to increasing' health problems, Fr. Way became a resident at the Dominican Friars' Center for Assisted Living Unit at St. Dominic Priory in 2004. Fr. Way is survived by a sister, Mrs. Alice Whalen, residing in Rhode Island, and two nieces: Mrs. Edward Fitzgerald of Barrington, RI and Mrs. Robert Helm of Cherry Hill. NJ. Liturgical Office for the Dead will be chanted at 7:30 p.m., Friday, November 28 at St. Dominic Church, 6th and E Street SW, Washington, DC, Wake following in the Church until 9:30 p.m. Wake at St. Dominic Church on Saturday morning, November 29 from 8:00 until 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m., Saturday. Burial following the Funeral Liturgy will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Father Way's memory to the Dominican Friars Center for Assisted Living, 630 E Street SW, Washington, DC.
