rances Mary "Cina" Fernandes, a five-year resident of Edgewater and previously of Alexandria, VA, died on Sunday, April 28, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. Born October 24, 1925 in Calabria, Italy, Frances earned her Bachelor's Degree in French from the University of Maryland and worked for the United Nations supporting the French delegation. She was also a French teacher for Prince George’s County Public Schools and Saint Columba Catholic School in Oxon Hill. She was currently a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Edgewater. Frances was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Antonio Fernandes, one granddaughter Christina Fernandes and one sister, Esther Vricella. She is survived by three sons, Richard Fernandes of Fort Belvoir, VA, Marc Fernandes of Dunkirk and David Fernandes of Odenton; one daughter, Claudia Mills of Oakton, VA; two brothers, John Lucente of Davidsonville and Frank Lucente, Jr. of Edgewater; one sister, Angela Ferguson of Moriches, NY; two grandsons, James Fernandes of Alexandria, VA and Joseph Fernandes of Calvert County, MD; five granddaughters, Katherine Podlinski of Fairfax, VA, Sarah Hagen of Annandale, VA, Marcie and Nicole Fernandes of Dunkirk and Rebecce Fernandes of Fort Belvoir, VA and one great-grandson, Benjamin Podlinski. Friends are invited to Frances’ Life Celebration from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Wednesday, May 1 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 2 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Rd., Edgewater. Interment Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton.
