Frances Smith - Obituary

rances A. Smith, 83, of Annapolis, Md. died December 24th. Fran was born June 21, 1930 in New Orleans, LA and grew up in Metairie, LA but lived most of her life in the Washington DC area. She moved to Washington DC to work for the Dept of the Navy and subsequently married Richard Smith in 1954. Richard passed in October, 2011. In 1963, she moved to England with her family for 3 years as part of her husband’s job transfer where Fran and family enjoyed exploring the English countryside and historical sites. Fran was a home maker, raising 4 boys while participating in a variety of charity and personal interests including still-life art and ceramics. Always involved in church activities, she was a devoted Christian and role model to her family. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling and spending time at their beach house in Ocean City. She routinely volunteered at the Surratt House in Clinton, MD as well as various theaters in Washington, DC. She is survived by her 4 sons: Steven J. (Sharon), Kenneth D. (Mary), Michael B. (Lorna) and Eric C.; five grandchildren; Travis, Carly, Samantha, Michelle and Michael; one great grandchild, Miles; her sister-in-law, Nancy; her nephew, Glenn, and her nieces, Patty, Peggy and Pam. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 30 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Annapolis. The family will receive friends immediately thereafter at the church. A private family service will be held at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 31 Rowe Boulevard, Annapolis, MD 21401 or to The Surratt House Museum, 9118 Brandywine Rd, Clinton, MD 20735 (Attn: Laurie Verge – In Memory of Fran Smith).
