Francis Henry Frain - Obituary

I

t is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband and father, Francis Henry Frain (Franny). Franny passed away on July 16, 2022 at the age of 92 at a hospice center in Pasadena, Maryland. He was born in Topeka, Kansas on June 23rd, 1930 to the late Elmer P. and Meda Bever Frain. He was raised in Washington, DC and lived in Silver Spring, MD for many years, where he raised his family. He also spent his summers near the South River in Edgewater, MD and has lived in the Loch Haven community for the past 24 years. He worked as a cartographer for the Army Map Service until he retired, and spent many years in the army reserves. He was quite the athlete, playing basketball in high school, and he played first base on a championship softball team in the DC area. He also enjoyed playing golf. He was a basketball official in the DC area for over 25 years and was active in the local Boys Club. Sports remained a passion throughout his life. He enjoyed watching baseball, basketball, golf, football, and hockey. He was thrilled when his beloved Washington Nationals won the World Series in 2019. He enjoyed his Loch Haven neighborhood very much. He loved being outside, taking walks, stopping to catch up with his friends and neighbors, working in his yard, or just happily sitting in a lawn chair catching the sun with his little doggie Odie. He was always making new friends and participated in many community activities. He also enjoyed volunteering in the thrift shop at the Joy Reigns Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mary Beth W. Frain, with whom he enjoyed his retirement years and whom he loved very much. He is preceded in death by brother Glenn Elmer (wife, Ruth), who passed away in 1989. His remaining brother Henry Hugh (wife, Betty) lives in Potomac, MD. He has five surviving children with his first wife, Patricia Marie Walsh Frain: Daniel Francis Frain ( wife, Janet ) of Chestertown, MD; Vicki Marie Zelenka ( husband, Paul ) of Columbia, MD; Timothy Thomas Frain (wife, Minako) of Tokyo, Japan; Suzanne Patricia Frain of Silver Spring, MD; and Sandra Jean Frain (husband Lowry Brooks) of Fallston, MD. He also had a little girl, Teresa Marie, who passed away as an infant. He is also survived by 14 beautiful grandchildren: Samuel, Daniel, Rebekah, Sierra, Nathan, and Joshua Frain; Joshua, Eric, and Natasha Zelenka; Monica and Colin Frain, Jake and Maggie Brooks; Joslyn Cord; and many nieces and nephews. He was a loving and active father, attending countless athletic events and scouting trips. A memorial service will be in a few months. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his name to Hospice of the Chesapeake, John and Cathy Belcher Campus, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 21122. They are the closest thing to angels on earth.
