Francis Sherman - Obituary

rancis William Sherman Francis “Frank” William Sherman, 85, a 35 year resident of Deale, MD and previously of Garrett Park, Maryland, died on Tuesday, October 9, at his residence in Deale, MD after a 10 month battle with cancer. Born July 11, 1927 in Milford, MA, to the late Francis and Dorothy Sherman, he earned his GED diploma aboard the USS Alabama during WWII. He was the youngest crewman on the USS Alabama enlisting at the age of 14;Frank was considered a plank owner as he commissioned and decommissioned the Alabama. Frank was an entrepreneur who owned and operated Carter Tours, Sherman Coaches and Sherman’s Marina. Frank served as president of SKAL for the Washington DC area, and enjoyed being of service to his customers. He also loved to traveling with his family and surprising his 11 grandchildren as Abracadabra. Frank was predeceased by his son Mark D. Sherman and one sister, Dorothy Sherman. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth E. Sherman, “Beejay”, two sons, Francis W. Sherman of Sandy Spring, MD, Patrick F. Sherman of Lothian, MD, and two daughters, Kathleen A Hutson of Laurel, MD and Elizabeth A. Sherman of Brookville, MD. Frank is also survived by two sisters, Patricia Gilchrist of Shrewsbury, MA and Barbara Sherman of Shrewsbury, MA and 11 grandchildren. Friends are invited to Frank’s Life Celebration on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, October 12 at 11am at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 4900 Strathmore Ave., Garrett Park, MD. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
