rank J. Smollon, Jr., age 88, died on Sunday, September 2, 2012 under the care of Hospice at the Ginger Cove Community in Annapolis. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on June 30, 1924 to the late Frank and Florence Smollon, Frank had his college career interrupted by WWII where, as an Army rifleman, he was captured by the Germans on the first day of the Battle of the Bulge. After his escape and return home he was honored with the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the Prisoner of War Medal among others. Eventually he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Pratt Institute, married Florence Kelly Smollon and started his working career and raising a family. Former employers are General Electric, Maryland Shipbuilding and Dry-Dock and Transamerica DeLaval. He was an active member of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE), The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Davidsonville Ruritan, American Legion Post 7, Holy Family Catholic Church, and many more. He was a devout Catholic and had much pride in his Irish roots. Frank was preceded in death by his son Gregory Smollon. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Florence Smollon; a daughter Karen (Fred) Hill; two sons, Frank (Rosemary) Smollon, III and Michael (Alicia) Smollon , five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 10 at 10:00am at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD with burial to follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD.
