RED RICHARD TODD Fred Todd of Harwood, Maryland came into this world on August 13, 1930 to the family of Walter and Lydia (Blackenship) Todd. He passed away in Annapolis, MD on Friday, January 22, 2016. He was born in Brown County, Indiana, joining three sisters and four brothers. Fred went through school in Indianapolis , Indiana and following his high school graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force. After boot camp he was assigned to Fairfield Air Force Base at Spokane, Washington. While serving there he met a young lady and fell in love with Keo Marlene Shoff. When Fred was transferred to Topeka, Kansas, Keo followed him where she remained until he was discharged and they returned to Spokane. He soon enrolled at Washington State College in Pullman, Washington. He was a member of the boxing team and during the summers he interned at a camp for the handicapped at Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Fred and Keo were married on March 29, 1953 in the Pullman Church of the Nazarene. Upon his graduation with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education he accepted a teaching and basketball coaching position at Winthrop, Washington. After serving two years he accepted the same type of position at Concrete, a town on the West side of Washington State. While there he applied and accepted a job with the U.S. Forest Service in the Job Corps. Later he accepted transfers as a teacher, camp director and eventually promotion to the National Office in Washington D.C. Throughout the years he served at Olalla, Oregon; Willows, California; and Chadron, Nebraska . Fred retired from the Federal Service in 1985. During his career Fred mentored many young men and was instrumental to them in continuing on to a higher education and/or to a successful working career. He kept in touch with many of them throughout the years. He loved sports and was always ready to help any of his students to participate. He was an avid and very successful bowler belonging to leagues that met three time a week most of his life. Fred and Keo adopted two boys, James “Jim” Michael (Fowler) Todd and Robert “Bob” Wayne (Jenkins) Todd. These boys were welcomed into the family and were loved as tho’ they were biological sons. Keo preceded Fred in death on September 28, 2002 and his son, Jim, preceded him in death on July 30, 2004. Also preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, James, Melvin and Bryan; sisters Grace, Thelma and Daisy. Fred leaves many loved ones behind: a son, Bob (Debra) Todd; a sister, Juanita; grandsons, Sean and Zachary Todd; granddaughter, Brittany Todd; and step grandchildren, Jill Stone and Angie Rae. Fred Todd was a loving and generous who will be missed by many of his family and friends. Friends may call on Sunday, January 31, 2016 from 2pm to 4pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A graveside service will be held for Fred on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 1pm at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville, MD 21032.
