Gene Walter Newport, Sr., a longtime resident of Edgewater and previously of Washington, DC, died July 21, 2021 at his home after a lengthy illness.  He was born in Washington on September 20, 1940 and was a 1959 graduate of Anacostia High School.  He worked for Prince Georges County from 1962-72 before embarking on a 30 year career as a draftsman for Randy Barrett and Associates surveying company.
Gene was a very talented musician who toured with numerous bands during his life.  He liked playing pranks on his friends, gardening and doing yard work with his wife Christine.  A talented artist, Gene also loved working on his Indian motorcycle and his ’49 Ford.  
Gene is survived by his wife of 44 years, Christine M. Newport; his children, Gene W. Newport, Jr. of Delaware and Jacqueline Newport Garland of Scottsdale, AZ; his step-daughter, Cindy Rammage-Kite of South Carolina; his siblings, Bo Newport of Davidsonville, Shirley Godbout of Annapolis and Teresa Edwards of Harwood; and his grandchildren, Derrace Baker and Jacqueline Garland.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Gotheran and Dorothy Newport.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, July 31 at 1 PM at Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gene’s name may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 21122.
