George Nick Bounelis - Obituary

eorge N. Bounelis, 98, a lifelong resident of Annapolis, MD, passed away peacefully at the Spa Creek Center on June 5, 2017 surrounded by his family. Born in 1919 to the late Nick and Efrosini Bounelis, George was one of seven children. He graduated from Annapolis High School where he was an exceptional athlete. In 1942, he married Lucille Dougherty in Annapolis and, for the next 45 years, they raised five children and shared a beautiful life together until Lucille’s death in 1987. George and his brother, Charlie, operated the Capital Restaurant on Main Street in Annapolis for 30 years. After selling the restaurant, George became the manager of the Orleans House in Arlington, VA and finished his career at the Dockside restaurant in Annapolis. When not working, George was well known for his prowess officiating at multiple sporting events for high schools and colleges as well as community leagues. In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by his daughter, Lanie Hylton; brothers, Charles and Daniel; and sisters, Catherine Botts, Domna Janis, Helen Sisson and Mary Mendis. He is survived by his children, Nick, Michael (Jan), Cindy (Richard) Culp and Paul (Tonya); six grandchildren, Stephen Culp, John Brown, Christopher Bounelis, Jeffrey Culp, Jennifer Bounelis Mackey and Amber Bounelis; and nine great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hannah, Abby, Bryson, Tate, Callie, Aiden, Lanie and Cooper. He is also survived by his closest cousins, Steven Abramedis and Angel Bounelis of Annapolis and Danny Diamondidis of North Carolina; and numerous nephews and nieces. Friends are invited to celebrate George’s life with his family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 8 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD where George’s funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 9.
