G

eorge D. Janis, 91, a 60-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Long Island, N.Y., died Friday, October 8, 2010, at the Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born December 29, 1918 in Richmond, Va. to the late James and Bessie Gianacopoulos. George served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He was also awarded the Jubilee of Liberty Medal by the French government on the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion. In civilian life, George worked for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after a 22-year career. He was a member of the Model Railroad Club in Baltimore and was a railroad enthusiast. He also enjoyed theater organ music and attending events at Radio City Music Hall in New York. His favorite movie was “Lost Horizon” from 1936. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his brothers, Spiro and Paul Janis, and his sister, Kay Bibbe. He is survived by his wife, Domna, whom he married in 1942; two sons, Jim Janis of Lexington, SC and Philip Janis of Columbia, MD and one daughter, Catherine Teske of Edgewater, MD. He is also survived by two grandchildren. Friends are invited to George’s Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037 on Wednesday, October 13, from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral service begins at 12 noon. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
