eorge L. McFadden, Jr. Major General US Army Retired Major General George L. McFadden, Jr., US Army Ret., a 25-year resident of Annapolis, died of heart failure on July 24, 2012 at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. General McFadden was born on October 16, 1927 in Sharon, Pa to the late George L and Frances Byrne McFadden, Sr. he received a B.S. degree from the University of Omaha, his M.S. from George Washington University and was a graduate of Harvard University’s Advanced Management Program. General McFadden served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1983, advancing from Private to Major General. He served as a forward observer in Korea in 1950 and as a Battalion Commander with the 1st Infantry Division in Viet Nam in 1966. Other key assignments included: Commanding Officer, 7th Infantry Division Artillery in Korea; Deputy Commanding General of the Army Security Agency; Deputy Commanding General of the 9th Infantry Division, Deputy Director of the National Security Agency; Commanding General, Southern European Task Force; Deputy Director for Foreign Intelligence, Defense Intelligence Agency. Upon retirement from the Army he was Director, Washington Studies and Analysis Group, McDonnell-Douglas; Corporate Vice President, CompuDyne Corporation; Senior Vice President, the Abbott Group, Inc., and Director, Office of Security Affairs, U.S. Department of Energy. General McFadden's military decorations include: Silver Star, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with V Device (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Meritorious Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Air Medal (11 awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with V Device, Purple Heart, and the Parachutist Badge. General McFadden was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and his interests included travelling and boating. In addition to his parents, General McFadden was preceded in death by his son Mark McFadden, brothers; John, Joseph and Eugene McFadden and his sister Anne Lumpp. He is survived by his wife, Floretta B. McFadden, his children; Kathleen Dupuis of Annapolis, Kenneth McFadden of Herndon, VA, Robert McFadden of Palm Harbour, Fl, George McFadden of Edgewater and William McFadden of Annapolis, brother of; Bernard McFadden of Keystone Heights, FL, Edward McFadden of Houston, Texas, Mary Frances DeJohn, of Sharon, PA and Margaret McCormick of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Also survived by his grandchildren; Matthew, Jennifer, John, Bryan, Sarah, Megan, Kevin, Kelly, Zach, Libby, Patrick, Nicholas and four great-grandchildren; Graham, Grace, Eli and Elizabeth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, July 31 at 11am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater, MD. Interment with full military honors will held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Building Fund.
