G

eorge B. Woelfel, Jr. (Bucky), 80, a lifelong resident of Annapolis, MD died on November 25, 2010 at his home. Born January 10, 1930, he was raised on Murray Ave. in Annapolis, MD and attended Annapolis Elementary School on Green Street and graduated from Mount St. Joseph High School in 1946, Loyola College in 1950 and the University of Baltimore law school in 1957; he was sworn in as an attorney in July 1957. George married his wife, Kathleen L. Meench Woelfel on May 24, 1957 and moved to Eastport, where he lived for over 53 years. George was self-employed as a trial attorney with his practice on Cathedral St. until his retirement in 2007. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan. Bucky was an avid big game hunter and besides hunting in the lower 48 states he also traveled to Alaska and Canada. While in Alaska he survived a plane crash and was walking out of the wilderness until being rescued by a group of geologists with a helicopter. He began hunting as a young man, going into the wild with his father (often as the gofer). He was a member of the Trappers Assn., the National Rifle Assn. and the A.A. Co. Fish & Game club. George served as a trial magistrate under Gov. Tawes, assistant Annapolis City attorney under Roger (Pip) Moyer, Annapolis housing authority attorney and as a county board of election supervisor’s attorney. George ran for State Senator and the House of Delegates, district 30, with the slogan "Get Lucky with Bucky". George was a former member of the B.P.O.E. 665 Elks club and lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. George was a devoted father and grandfather. George is survived by his wife; five daughters, Nancy Woelfel of Davidsonville, MD, Wendy Woelfel, of Annapolis, MD, Carol (Bobby) Woelfel Thames of Edgewater, MD, Sandra Woelfel Fletcher of Davidsonville, MD and Margaret (Jeffrey) Woelfel Miller of Centreville, MD; one son, George M. (Cheryl) Woelfel of Goldsboro, MD; one sister, Dorothy V. Woelfel Caldwell of Annapolis, MD. He is also survived by nine grandsons, six granddaughters, one step grandson and one step granddaughter; two great grandsons, one step great grandson and one step great granddaughter; six nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Gardner and George B. Woelfel, Sr.; his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Woelfel Curley Wilson. Friends are invited to George’s Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Tuesday from 4 to 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, December 1 at 10:30am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery.
