Gerardo Maniquiz Gacad, M.D. “Gerry”, 77, a resident of Davidsonville MD, and previously of Bowie, MD, passed away on August 6, 2020.  Born on April 23, 1943, in Tartaro, Bulacan, Philippines, the oldest of 8 siblings, to the late Bartolomeo Gomez Gacad and Purificacion Maniquiz Gacad. Gerry was a valedictorian 1959 graduate of San Sebastian Catholic High School. Gerry then attended University of Santo Tomas, Manilla and received an Associate of Arts degree in Pre-Medical Education in 1961. Gerry next attended University of Santo Tomas, College of Medicine, graduated in 1965 in the top 10% of his class, and after graduation, Gerry completed his medical Residency and Internship program at the US Air Force Regional Hospital, Clark Airforce Base in 1966. On a path toward becoming a pulmonary specialist, he moved to Waco, Texas to start his Internal Medicine Residency at Baylor University Hospital from 1966-1969 and then to the Veteran’s Administration Hospital of Washington D.C.  from 1969-1971. During this time, he also completed the resident and fellow requirements for Pulmonary Medicine at George Washington University in 1972. Gerry achieved his board certification in Internal Medicine in 1975, Pulmonary Disease in 1976, and was elected Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FACCP) in 1978. Gerry then joined a partnership practice as a Pulmonologist with Louis Steinberg MD in 1976 and then moved on to his own practice in 1989 through 2020. During his time in private practice, Gerry also worked as a Pulmonary Consultant at University of MD Laurel Medical Center, Doctors Community Hospital, and University of MD Prince Georges Hospital Center. Each of these 3 facilities recognized his hard work as a physician with numerous accolades and awards.  Ever devoted to continuing education, Gerry also taught part time as an assistant professor at George Washington University Medical School.  Throughout his storied 43-year vocation as a Pulmonologist, Gerry tirelessly served and was beloved by his patients. Gerry loved boating, gardening, attempting to play the harmonica, and just being outdoors. One could always see beautiful rose bushes, sculpted evergreen shrubs, and vegetable gardens in his 2-acre yard.  A devout Catholic, Gerry was a humble example of a great family man, and just this past December he was able to celebrate 50 years of marriage to his wife Lydia. Gerry especially loved spending time with his grandson, Nicholas.  Gerry is survived by his wife Lydia, his sons Jonathan and Oliver, his daughter in-laws Leonor and Aileen, and his grandson, Nicholas. Friends and loved ones are invited to celebrate Gerry’s life on Friday August 14 Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD from 2:00PM- 4:00PM and 6:00PM to 8:00PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Family Church, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD on Saturday, August 15 at 1:00PM.
