regory “Greg” Dwight Marquardt, 68, peacefully passed away on March 8, 2026, after a lengthy battle with early onset dementia. Born on July 19, 1957 in St. Paul, MN to the late Dr. Warren and Alice Marquardt, Greg grew up playing ice hockey and many other outdoor sports. He relocated with his family to New Carrollton, MD in 1969 where the family became woven into the University of Maryland Terrapin life and spent time playing various sports with the New Carrollton Boys Club. It was in Maryland where Greg forged many life-long friendships that are still true to this day. Greg was a standout athlete in multiple sports, but especially in football at Parkdale High School in Riverdale, MD. At 6’4” he was a bruising defensive lineman. In 1975 he was selected for the MD All County, MD All State and MD/DC/VA All Metropolitan Football Teams and named, at the time, as one of the best defensive linemen in Panther history despite the Washington Post picking his team to lose every game. His leadership and prowess helped the football team to excel and ultimately win its first MD state championship. Football and sports were in his blood. Over the years, Greg and many beloved friends were a fixture at Maryland Terrapin Football tailgates and games. He was also a huge fan of NFL football and was an avid Washington Redskins fan. Greg went on to earn his BS in Business Management at the University of Maryland, University College. He parlayed his football leadership skills into a successful career in office furniture sales. Professionally, his highest achievements were his time spent as the District Manager of the Desks and Furnishings company in Washington, DC, and as principal owner of Alliance Office Furniture in Springfield, VA. Personally, what made him the happiest were his relationships with family, friends, his adored dogs, Toby and Spuds and almost every stranger who he met. Greg made friends everywhere and everyone loved him. He could regale you with the funniest tale over a beer and a game of horseshoes or cornhole. He loved golfing, cookouts, the beach, working in his yard, and music, especially the Allman Brothers, the Marshall Tucker Band and Earth, Wind & Fire. He had an amazing gift of gab and enjoyed socializing with people of all ages. Greg leaves behind a big set of shoes to fill. He would want anyone reading this to live their life to the absolute fullest, be happy and be kind to everyone you meet. Greg is survived by his children, Ashley (Jake) Wikman and Lindsey (Zach) Young; his beloved siblings, Sheila (John) Taylor, Cheryl (Glen) Huston and Steve (Christine) Marquardt, his grandchild, 11 nieces and nephews, several favorite aunts and uncles, many loving cousins, and throngs of beloved friends. A family memorial service and celebration of life is being planned for the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite animal charity or to the Dementia Society of America (dementiasociety.org). Condolences may be made by using the Memories link on this page.
