Gregory Joseph Segreti - Obituary

G

regory Segreti passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025 in Lutherville, MD. Greg was born on October 10, 1942 at Garfield Hospital in Washington, DC to the late Clara and Salvatore Segreti. They, along with Greg’s younger brothers, Robert and Joseph, lived on D Street, S.E. where Greg attended Holy Comforter Parochial School. In 1955, the Segreti family moved to the Brookland area of Northeast Washington. Gregory attended DeMatha Catholic High School, then a relatively new school, in Hyattsville, MD. At DeMatha, Greg excelled academically. He graduated nearly at the top of his class, was named class Vice President, was a member of the National Honor Society and, among other endeavors, was editor of the school yearbook and newspaper. Upon graduation from high school, Greg attended Catholic University, graduating in June, 1964.He accepted an offer to teach English at his Alma Mater, DeMatha, fulfilling a lifelong love of teaching, the pursuit of which he will be most remembered. DeMatha, as it turned out, also introduced Greg to travel. He coordinated his first trip to France in 1967 with DeMatha students. Over his lifetime, Greg toured the Far East, Middle East, and Europe. Gregory possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of classical art and history, no doubt enriched by travel. In 1967, Gregory enrolled in the American Studies program at the University of Maryland, College Park, completing a graduate degree in 1971. During that time, he was as a graduate resident eventually serving as the Area coordinator of the Denton Complex which he remembered fondly over the years. In 1973, Greg relocated to Annapolis and after a brief career in business accepted an administrative position at Anne Arundel Community College. He eventually returned to his true calling, teaching, which he did, passionately, until his retirement. During that time Greg completed a graduate program in Art History from the Johns Hopkins University and in 1993, Anne Arundel Community College awarded Greg its Teaching Excellence Award. In 2003, as a tenured Humanities/Philosophy professor and chairman of the American Studies department, Greg was one of 20 scholars awarded a fellowship for research at the Library of Congress. An avid reader, Gregory’s library included over 4,000 books, a diverse collection which he directed to be given to the Andrew G. Truxal Library at Anne Arundel Community College. Gregory Segreti was a modest man. He was a kind and generous brother; to countless others, he was a respected friend and colleague. Most importantly, he was compassionate believer in fairness and opportunity. He will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. Gregory is survived by his brothers, Robert and Joseph Segreti. Funeral arrangements are pending. Condolences may be made by using the Memories tab on this page.
