r. Harold Hawfield, 86, a resident of Edgewater for 13 years, died Jan. 14 in his home after a lengthy illness. Dr. Hawfield was born May 6, 1921, in Union County, N.C. He graduated from Duke University in 1940 with a bachelor's degree in medicine, and he received his doctorate of medicine degree in 1943 from Duke University Medical School. He lived in Chevy Chase before moving to Edgewater. He was a general surgeon for 25 years, then became the first Medical Director of Washington Hospital Center. He had several medical research reports published during his medical career. He served as secretary-treasurer and vice chairman of the Department of General Surgery; he was also a member of the medical board of the Washington Hospital Center and the Children's Hospital and the president of medical and dental staff at Washington Hospital Center in 1974. Dr. Hawfield served in the Army during World War II as a captain in the Medical Corps. He served on the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians in 1987, and he was also a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of the District of Columbia, the Osler Medical Society, the Hippocrates-Galen Medical Society, the Clinico-Pathologic Society and the American Academy of Medical Directors. He enjoyed golfing and traveling. He was an avid reader and enjoyed being with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Bostwick Hawfield. Survivors include his second wife, Isolde M. Hawfield; two sons, Timothy Hawfield of Waynesburg, Pa., and Michael Hawfield of Homer, Alaska; one daughter, Molly Gordon of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Family and friends may join in the celebration of his life at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 19 at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment is private.
