Harry Appleton - Obituary

H

arry Jean Appleton passed away peacefully on October 20, 2013 at Sunrise of Annapolis. Born on July 23, 1916 on Staten Island, NY, Harry moved to College Park, MD after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. His management-rental business kept him near the University of Maryland, where he was known as the unofficial Mayor of College Park. After the death of his beloved wife, Gertrude, he travelled widely, especially enjoying more than 50 cruises. There was no one quite like Harry. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, Harry always shared his wit, smile and World War II stories. Harry will be dearly missed by his family and all of his many friends and devoted caregivers at Sunrise. He is survived by two daughters, Jean Ann Mitchell of Sarasota, FL and Dawne Baumgardner of Seminole, FL; his only granddaughter, Rene Jeanenne Butta; his only great-grandson, David A. Butta and two great-great-grandsons, “Little Davey” and Corwin. Friends are invited to Harry’s Life Celebration from 9:00 am until his funeral service begins at 10:00 am on Thursday, October 24 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Interment will follow at George Washington Cemetery in Adelphi, MD. Contributions, in his memory, may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
