H

azel Catherine Trussell “Mama Haz”, 99, a 16-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Clinton, died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at Fairfield Nursing Home in Crownsville. She was born on September 9, 1911 in Ashburn, VA to the late John and Grace Thayer and graduated from Lucketts High School in Leesburg, VA. In 1932, Hazel married the late Hubert F. Trussell. She went to work as a sales clerk at the former Hecht Company in Silver Spring and, after her husband’s death in 1963, began working at the Gandy Goose Nursery in Temple Hills until her retirement in 1976. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis and enjoyed studying the bible as well as reading, crocheting and doing for others, including volunteering for senior activities. In addition to her husband, Hazel was predeceased by her sons, Hubert F. Trussell, Jr., who died in 1987 and Van Craig Randle, and by three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her son, John Trussell of Mitchellville, three daughters, Patricia Blowe of Annapolis, Barbara Merritt of Grasonville and Emma Burrows of Ellicott City, also survived by 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to Hazel’s Life Celebration at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, on Monday, January 17, from 10AM. until the funeral service begins at 11AM. Interment Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Seasons Hospice, 6934 Aviation Boulevard, Ste. N-R, Glen Burnie, MD 21061 or to the charity of your choice.
