erbert Hoover Rose, Jr., the son of the late Herbert Hoover Rose, Sr. and Minnie L. Smith, began his life on December 5, 1961, in Limestone, Maine. Herb was a loving and remarkable son, husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend. Those who knew Herb felt his generous spirit every day. He held a deep love for his alma maters—Scotland School for Veterans’ Children, Benjamin Franklin High School (Class of 1980), and Grambling State University. He was also a lifelong, passionate fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. Herb was known for his many talents—on the track, football field, basketball court, and at the card table. He was a master griller, the ultimate event planner, and the undeniable life of every party. His robust personality and unstoppable will made him truly one of a kind. In 1980, during a memorable night at Grambling State University, Herb met the love of his life, Debra (Flu). The two soon moved to Dallas, TX, and married in 1983. That same year, Herb joined the U.S. Air Force, where he earned the Good Conduct Medal and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon (Rifle). On November 28, 1983, he proudly took on his most cherished title—“Dad”—with the birth of his daughter. After receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force in July 1987, Herb moved his family to Miami, Florida, where he worked for the Miami Herald newspaper. In 1996, the family relocated to Fort Washington, MD, where he began his career as a roofer. Through hard work and dedication, he rose to become a respected Roofing Superintendent. His role allowed him to travel internationally, repairing roofs on U.S. embassies—a job he took great pride in. Among his many accomplishments, Herb was most proud of becoming a grandfather. He cherished every moment spent with his granddaughter—playing games, shopping, and encouraging her to always be her best. In recent years, Herb faced serious health challenges, but remained strong, determined, and full of spirit. In the early morning hours of June 21, 2025, he completed his race—and it was time for him to rest. Herb’s passing leaves a deep emptiness in the lives of those he touched. He is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Debra; his daughter, Choi’; brothers, Reginald and Avery; sisters, Bessie and Elrine; granddaughter, Jhoi’; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Rest well, dear Herbert. No more pain, no more suffering. Your memory will live on—forever in our hearts.
