omer Nelson Sewell was born on March 17, 1946, to the late Joe and Willie Mae Sewell in West Point, Mississippi. Homer peacefully went home to be with the Lord on February 23, 2019, at Georgetown Hospital. Homer accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age.
Homer was educated in West Point, MS and graduated from 5th Street High. After graduation, Homer attended the University of Chicago and EttaBena College in Illinois. In 1968 he moved to Washington, DC to attend University of DC. He enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, and playing in the band while in school.
Homer met his loving wife of 50 years Clara Sewell (“My favorite person”, as he called her), while they were in Middle School in Clay County Mississippi. They were united in Holy Matrimony on February 10, 1969 in Clay County Mississippi. To this union two children were born Anthony and Tawanna Sewell.
Homer was a Telecom Engineering for Bell Atlantic/Verizon where he retired after 30 years of service. After retirement, Homer was happy to dedicate his time to Christian outreach programs to assist people in learning the Lord. He was a beloved Sunday school teacher for the youth of the church and a devoted member of the Men’s Ministry.
Homer enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed going to live plays and musicals, viewing museums and exhibits, and NBA/ MLB games with his family. He also enjoyed traveling with his family throughout the United States. He mostly enjoyed seeing his granddaughter playing sports, softball, track and especially AAU basketball.
Homer leaves to cherish his memory and continue his legacy, his beloved wife Clara Sewell. His beloved children Anthony and Tawanna Sewell. His beloved granddaughter Nyla Mae Clark. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
We thank God for blessing us with Homer Sewell and he will be truly missed.
