T

he Honorable W. Byron Sorrell, 91, a 30-year resident of Deale and previously of University Park, died March 9 at his home following a one-month illness. He was born November 26, 1919 in Washington, DC to the late Clarence and Ethel Sorrell and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Lieutenant Commander. He was the youngest person ever sworn as an agent in the FBI. After graduating from the George Washington University Law School, he went into private law practice. In 1969, he was appointed a judge to the D.C. Supreme Court. Judge Sorrell was a member of the St. James’ Church in Lothian and formerly rode with De La Brooke Foxhounds W on his horse, Riley. He was also a past president of the Prince George’s County Bar Association. Judge Sorrell was predeceased by his wife, Viola B. Sorrell, who died in 2008 and son, John Byron Sorrell, who died in 2010. He is survived by a daughter, Joan Elizabeth Sorrell of Edgewater; two grandsons: Samuel J. Worsham of Edgewater and Christian B. Worsham of Stevensville; and two great granddaughters: Grace and Faith Worsham. Friends are invited to Judge Sorrell’s Life Celebration on Sunday, March 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 14, at 1 p.m. at St. James’ Church, 5757 Solomons Island Road, Lothian, MD 20711 with burial immediately following in the church cemetery.
