oward Malcolm “Mickey” Skipper, 78, a resident of Harwood for 13 years and previously of Annapolis, died on Wednesday, March 18 at his home after a one and a half year bout with cancer. Born on January 14, 1937 in Annapolis, Mickey was a 1955 graduate of Annapolis High School. He served with the National Guard for six years and worked at the family owned and operated business, Skipper Fuel Oil of Annapolis. He played minor league baseball with the St. Louis Cardinal’s organization. Later in life he was the umpire and chief for the state of Maryland. From 1981 to 2003 Mickey served as the Maryland Regional Supervisor for the United States Pony Clubs, Inc. and received the Founders Award in 2002. He was a Life Member of both the Elk’s Club in Annapolis and the United States Pony Club. Mickey enjoyed trains, all sports and woodworking. He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Skipper whom he married in 1958; his daughters, Kimberly Cranford of Rose Haven and Karen Owens of Severna Park; his sister, Peggy Galloway of Stevensville and his grandsons, Adam Nuthall of Severna Park and Matthew Cranford of Rose Haven. Friends are invited to Mickey’s Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm on Sunday, March 22 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD where his funeral service will be held at 10am on Monday, March 23. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Annapolis.
