uguster Maurice Settles aka “Moe” was born in Washington, DC on January 13, 1969, to Huguster Frager and Sandra Settles. Maurice was an only child; however, he had a host of maternal first cousins who were more like his siblings and they loved him as their brother. Unfortunately, Moe lost his mom when he was just two years old and was raised by his maternal grandmother with help from his aunts and uncle. Maurice attended the District of Columbia (DC) Public Schools and worked various jobs before starting his career. He wed Judith Doreen Kennedy in 1997 and adopted their fur baby, Whispers, shortly after. Moe honored his vows and remained a devoted husband until Judy’s death in 2019. In August 2002 Maurice transitioned into his career with the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education, Division of Transportation as a Bus Attendant. He was compassionate about assisting students with disabilities and was admired by his colleagues and students. Maurice was dedicated to Union AFSCME Local 1959 as an organizer before his promotion to full-time under Teamsters. Maurice grew up with his cousin siblings in Huntwood prior to moving to Mayfair where he established additional friendships that continued into his adulthood; those special friends were his extended family. He was loyal, compassionate with a huge heart, and would give you the shirt off his back. Those who love him will miss his infectious smile, slick chuckle, and seeing those eyes peer over his glasses. If you “really” knew Moe, you know that he had love for Lady Luck—the lottery that is, and B-O-Y was he LUCKY! Some of us have a story or two about what he would have done had he hit it “big.” Because Moe had a huge heart, there’s no doubt he had a list of family and friends that he’d lookout for. Whispers wasn’t Moe’s only pet, Moe had his pet numbers, too! Some of you kin folk and close friends might agree that he “inherited” his luck from his Grandma Mud who was also a lucky one. So, if your heart feels heavy when Moe crosses your mind, take your moment to smile, laugh, or cry at that fond memory and go play his favorite number, 1818. Maurice was preceded in death by his wife Judith Kennedy, his mother Sandra Settles, his father Huguster Frager, his grandmother Myrtis Settles, his grandfather Theodore Settles, his aunt Frances Anderson, and his cousin-brother Barron Anderson. Maurice is survived by his uncle Theodore Settles, Jr. (Alice); aunts Teresa Douglass (Ralph), Myrtis Gant; cousin-sisters Lisa Tobin (Jerald), Paula Mallard (Al), Lakeitha Lee (Snoop), Christal Johnson (Gary); cousin-brothers Russell Anderson (Iris), Tyrus Dowtin (Donna), Theodore Settles III (Nikki), Ralph Douglass, Jr., Moses “Duke” Gant; several cousin-nieces and nephews, best friend-brother Andre Washington, and a host of other family and friends. Relatives and friends will gather on Saturday, April 15th from 10-11 AM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory: 6160 Oxon Hill road Oxon Hill, MD 20745, with a memorial service to begin at 11 AM.
