rene Higgins, 85, a 42-year resident of Bowie and previously of Landover Hills died of natural causes on January 22, 2013 at Brightview South River Assisted Living in Edgewater. Born September 23, 1927 in Nemacolin, PA, to the late Anna and Frank Marinoff, she graduated from Cumberland Township High School in Carmichaels, PA. Irene was employed the F.B.I., Geico Insurance Company and State Farm Insurance Company. She received a war service certificate signed by J. Edgar Hoover for her honorable war service for the F.B.I. during WWII. Irene was a former member of Ascension Catholic Church in Bowie. She loved spending time with her family, especially her daughters and grandchildren. Irene also enjoyed cooking, and was known for her homemade pies and halupkies. She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Higgins; her first husband, Michael Shlosky, Jr.; and two brothers, Peter and John Marinoff. She is survived by two daughters, Michelle (Terry) Rencher of Annapolis and Monica (Buddy) Reio of Bowie; a brother, Frank Marinoff of Point of Rocks; two sisters, Betty Galbaugh of Alexandria, VA and Kathleen Holupka of Prince William, VA; four grandchildren, Terri desGarennes of Golden, CO, Michael Rencher of Annapolis, and Lauren and Megan Reio of Bowie; and two great-grandsons, Braden and Kyle desGarennes of Golden, CO, and many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to Irene's Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm on Friday, February 1 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 11am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
