Irving Joseph True, Jr. - Obituary

I

rving Joseph True Jr, 88, of Fort Washington Maryland passed away on Monday December 9, 2024 while in the company of family members. Born February 6, 1936 in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of Irving Joseph True Sr and Katherine Thompson True. He was the husband of the late Claire Frances True who died December 3, 2020. They had been married 60 years. Irving grew up in Cranston, RI, where he spent his formative years. He went on to attend Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio where he earned a degree in Economics and Statistics. After college Irving served in the Army which led him to the Pentagon. After the Army he became a statistician for the U.S. Census Bureau. As a Census Bureau Branch Chief from the 1960’s – 1990’s, Irving was responsible for the reporting of monthly retail sales in the US. Irving was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with his family, sharing stories, and making sure that we all had quality time together. As soon as his first grandchild came along, he would get the entire family together at the beach or his favorite vacation spot, Deep Creek Lake. This quickly became a family tradition every summer. He looked forward to Sunday dinners with family, phone calls and visits. Irving and Claire took many trips once he retired from the Census Bureau. They drove across the US, went on cruises around the world, and traveled extensively to see family. Irving loved sports and history. His first date with Claire was to a hockey game! He actively followed the Washington Capitals Hockey Team, Washington football and baseball. He coached and was active in boys & girls clubs when his children were young. He was a voracious reader of history and enjoyed visiting local Civil War battle fields. His favorite TV show was Jeopardy and every night he and his children would text each other with their final jeopardy answer. Irving is survived his brother William (Bill) True, sisters-in-law Madeline Nicoletti and Gert Ionata; three children Melinda Stabler and her husband Nate, Joseph True and his wife Leslie, and Christopher True and his wife Amy; grandchildren Jessica, Meagan, Katherine, Lauren, Alex, Sarah, Michael and Stephen; great grandchildren, Malcolm, Maddison, Celeigh, Caroline, Michael Remington, Eleanor, Tristan, Owen and Adrian along with three more great grandchildren on the way. His great grandchildren will hear and know stories of how their Great Grandfather held strong and honest values and family commitment. A private memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Piscataway followed by interment of ashes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the USO (https://USO.org/donate/donate-in-honor).
