J

ohn “Jack" Van Wie, a resident of Lusby, MD since 1988 and formerly of Alexandria, VA died on December 1 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick. Born on September 12, 1929 in Washington, D.C., Jack earned a business degree from the University of Maryland in 1951. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956 and then began his career as a pilot with Capital Airlines. Capital merged with United Airlines in 1968 and Jack worked with United as a Captain until his retirement in 1994. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Redskins fan. Jack is survived by his wife, Carole B. Van Wie; his brothers, Francis O. and James L. Van Wie, both of Lothian, MD and William D. Van Wie of Dunkirk, MD. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald E. Van Wie and four sisters, Margaret Byrd, Thelma McClanahan, Loretta Jean Devine and Catherine LaLacheur. Friends are invited to Jack’s Life Celebration on Friday, December 5 from 10:00 am until a Mass of Christian Burial is offered at 12:00 pm at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Rd., West River, MD 20778. Interment will follow at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.
