ames Manning Barksdale, 84, a lifelong resident of Lothian, MD, passed away at his home on September 1, 2018. Born on August 2, 1934 in Annapolis, Manning was a 1952 graduate of Southern High School. He joined the U.S. Army where he was recruited to play on the Army’s official baseball team. After leaving military service, Manning pursued his passion for farming. He also became a field superintendant and part owner of Clevenger Corporation. Manning was a member of Local Union 32 and a board member of both Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and the Anne Arundel County Farm Bureau. An avid Orioles fan, he also enjoyed bowling and dancing.
Manning was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mamie Barksdale and his loving nephew, George Barksdale, Jr. He is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Margaret Moreland Churn Barksdale; one son, James R. “Chip” Churn of Annapolis, MD; two daughters, Sandy (Paul) Marshall of Harwood, MD and Sherry (Sean) Brewer of Tampa, FL; one brother, Jack Barksdale; two sisters, Nancy Barksdale and Janice Jackson; three grandchildren, Victoria Mackey, Sara Churn and J.R. Churn III, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to celebrate Manning’s life from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4 at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 122 Bayard Road, Lothian, MD 20711. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Manning’s memory may be made to the church.
