ames L. Cleaveland died on Monday, February 10, 2014, at the Fort Washington Nursing Home. He was born in Buena Vista, Maryland, on December 12, 1927. Survived by his wife of 64 years, Catherine Bailey Cleaveland (Kitty); children Jane C. Beam, Sharon C. Johnsen (Lee) and James T. Cleaveland (Marlene); Grandchildren Jesse Beam, Jenna Parker (James), Amber Acevedo (Anthony), Ryan and Hayley Cleaveland; Great Grandchildren Tristan and Devyn Parker and Payton Acevedo. Siblings surviving are Madge Moore, Robert Cleaveland and Mabel Howell. Preceded in death by his parents J. Ritchie and Merie S. Cleaveland, siblings Violet Hite, Dora Defibaugh, Mary Johnson, Elda Jane Brown and John, Raymond and Vernon Cleaveland. Also preceded in death by three grandchildren: Chad, Rachel and Kyle Johnsen and great granddaughter Kadence Bailey Parker.
He was a 1946 graduate of Surrattsville High School in Clinton, Maryland. He joined the Operating Engineers Union #77 in 1949. In addition to his interest in his garden and tinkering in his garage he was a 10 year member of Men’s Senior Beltway Softball Team – “Maryland Old Liners”; Knights of Columbus #11171 of St. John’s in Clinton, Maryland; Surratts Senior Club and St John’s Senior Club.
Relatives and friends are invited to James' Life Celebration on Sunday, February 16 from 2 to 5pm at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, February 17, 2014 at 11am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 8908 Old Branch Ave., Clinton, MD. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
