Lieutenant Colonel James “Jim” A. Goebel, USMC (Ret.), passed away on 15 April 2023 in Annapolis, MD. He was 79 years old. 

Born in Frostburg, MD, he was the son of Bill and Connie Goebel.  The family enjoyed spending time at their cabin on Deep Creek Lake, where he developed his love of boating, fishing, and waterskiing.  He treasured his time there with family and friends throughout his life.  Jim’s noteworthy football and academic skills at Beall High School (Class of 1962) helped him obtain an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he lettered in football and lacrosse.

Upon graduation with the Class of 1967, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and married his high school sweetheart, Susan Sleeman. He served a tour in Vietnam as an Air Traffic Control officer, and earned his Masters degree at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, before spending the balance of his 23-year USMC career in data systems at many duty stations.

	After retirement from the Marine Corps, Jim and Susan relocated to the Annapolis area where he was happy to cheer on USNA athletics, attending as many sporting events as possible.  He continued his career in data systems for 15 years in various project management roles, before retiring in 2010. 

Jim’s favorite activities included enthusiastically supporting Navy football, spending time with his grandchildren, and exceling in his “waterman duties” (boating, crabbing, and fishing).  He loved to travel with Susan, and their 54-year marriage has always been an inspiration to the family.

	Predeceased by his parents, Jim is survived by his wife, Susan; their children (and spouses), Brian (Tina), and Tracy (Doug); grandchildren Will, Jake, Henry, Kate, Jack and Charlie; and his sister, Marie Alsop and her husband, Bill.

	A private service and interment ceremony will be held at the USNA Columbarium for the family at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association.
