ames (“Jim”) Edward Mahoney, Sr., 82, business executive, federal official, and US Navy Pilot (LCDR) James (“Jim”) E. Mahoney, 82, died unexpectedly of a sudden cardiac event on May 21 in Annapolis, MD, said his wife of nearly 60 years, Jessie Lew Mahoney. Jim was born in High Bridge, NJ, and spent the beginning of his career as a US Navy Seaplane ASW Pilot (VP-34 and VP-45), which took him to various countries including Trinidad, Panama, and Bermuda. He retired from the US Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander in the 1970s. Following his active duty military career, Jim was a member of the faculty at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL, serving as the Assistant to the Director of Research. In 1962, he was awarded a Ph.D. fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management where he also served as a member of the faculty. Before successfully defending his doctoral dissertation, Jim joined the National Aeronautics & Space Administration in their Management Research Program during the height of NASA’s manned space program, becoming Chief of the Dissemination Branch, Technology Utilization Division. Jim subsequently spent several years in Washington, DC, in various civil service management roles, including serving as Director of the President’s Advisory Council on Management Improvement (PACMI), working closely with senior leaders in industry, military, and government, including the late Gen. Bernard Schriever and the late John W. Rollins. Following his career in civil service, Jim founded a private consultancy, Results Cubed, based in Bethesda, MD, and subsequently served as Executive Vice President of Rollins, Inc. Following retirement, Jim and his wife moved full-time to Deale, MD, where for several years they served as a host family sponsoring Naval Academy Midshipmen and their families. Family, friends, and the Midshipmen alike, will remember Jim most for his generous hospitality and many enlightening (often humorous) stories. Jim is survived by his wife Jessie Lew (Thornton) Mahoney; son James E. Mahoney, II (Carolyn) of Nashua, NH, daughters Colleen P. Mahoney of Silver Spring, MD and E. Kathleen McNickle (Daniel) of Rockville, MD; grandchildren Kyle B. McNickle, Sr. (Marguerite) of Washington, DC, Kaitilin R. Mahoney of Chicago, IL, Brendan J. McNickle of Louisville, KY, John P. Mahoney of Boston, MA, Colleen E. McNickle of Chicago, IL, and Patricia T. Mahoney of Chicago, IL; and one great grandchild K. Brooks McNickle, Jr. Friends may call on Sunday, May 24, 2015 from 3 to 5pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Inurnment Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
