ames Paul Manning, 76, of Annapolis, MD died on April 11, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of a stroke. Born January 30, 1934 in Tiff City, Missouri to the late Lena May (HARRYMAN) and Arthur Manning, he attended San Diego State University and University of Nevada at Reno. He was in the United States Army in Augusta, GA; teaching electronics from 1957-1959. James than joined IBM in 1959 and worked as a hardware engineer on the IBM SAGE computer (continental air-defense network commissioned by the U.S. military); he then worked for UCLA Medical Center from 1981-1984 in its Mainframe Computer Department. James later worked as a programmer on mainframe systems applications and retired in 1991 from IBM as a Systems Programming Consultant in Gaithersburg, MD. Following retirement he worked as a systems programmer for the FDIC from 1991-2002. Mr. Manning's was a sailor, car buff (especially exotic sports cars-he had a right-drive MG in 1946), jazz fan, polymath and autodidact, reader, thinker and quiet philosopher. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
