J

ames P. Oberholtzer, 92, a long-time resident of Anne Arundel County, died on Monday, March 22 at home in Ginger Cove. Born on April 28, 1928 in Indianapolis, IN, James was a graduate of Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, a proud member of the US Naval Academy Class of 1950 and held a Master’s Degree in Vocational Education from Purdue University. He served in Korea and Vietnam and was a Naval Aviator for most of his career in the Navy. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1970. After retiring from the Navy and earning his Master’s Degree, James taught aeronautics and acrobatics at Purdue University before becoming a simulator and ground instructor for Allegheny Airlines, US Airways and Flight Safety International. He was an avid sailor on the Chesapeake Bay and enjoyed cycling and travel, including a bicycle ride from California to Florida at the age of 68. James was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Patricia Whittington Oberholtzer who passed in 1991. James is survived by his three sons, Michael Oberholtzer and his wife, Karla of River Forest IL, Stephen Oberholtzer and his wife, Laura of Dallas TX, and David Oberholtzer and his wife, Elisa of West Orange NJ; nine grandchildren and 6 great- grandchildren. He will be inurned at the US Naval Academy Columbarium and a memorial service to be held there later this year when conditions permit.
