J

ean Alfonso Brown, 88, a 21-year resident of Annapolis and formerly of Silver Spring, died December 22 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was born on March 24, 1924 in Union City, Obion, TN to the late Alfonso and Elizabeth Brown. Jean served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in July 1947. He attended American University and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and later worked at the Defense Mapping Agency where he provided support to NASA in 1969 for Apollo 11’s first moon landing and was selected in 1975 from a group of competitors to design a special transportation map of New York City. He retired as the Agency’s Division Chief of Visual Communications. He was a member of the Association of Mapping Seniors and served as president in 1995. Jean was also a member of All Hallows Church in Edgewater, where he volunteered as a money counter, and the Heritage Harbour TV Committee. He was a tour guide at the William Paca House in Annapolis. Jean was an artist and avid reader. He loved animals and enjoyed birdwatching. Jean was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn M. Brown, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Joan, one son, Jeff (Mary) Brown of Gaithersburg; two daughters, Jenifer Brown of Fairfax, VA and Jody Brown of Washington, DC; and one sister, Betty Suzanne Connor of Eau Claire, WI. Friends are invited to Jean’s memorial service at 10AM, December 26, at All Hallows Church, 3604 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Interment at a later date.
