EANNE W. HAYES 94,died of natural causes at her home in Riderwood Retirement Village, Silver Spring, Maryland. Widow of DCPD Detective Sergeant John W. Hayes, Jeanne is survived by sons Stephen and Warren, their wives Cynthia and Erin, granddaughter Robin and Brent Layne, grandsons John and Mike and their wives Laurie and Barbara, and great-grandsons Garrett, Gavin, Griffin, Cory and Craig. Memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 14, at Kalas Funeral Home, 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, MD 20745 (phone 301-567-9424). Native Washingtonian Jeanne earned her Juris Doctor degree at the Washington College of Law (now part of American University), and her BA from George Washington University. A female pioneer in the convention/exposition business, Jeanne was inducted into the Convention Industry Council’s Hall of Leaders in 1991, and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Washington Convention & Visitors’ Bureau. She served as the first woman president of the National Association of Exposition Managers (now IAEE) from 1978 to 1980, where she led the development of the first Certified Exposition Management education program and received the association’s highest honor, the Pinnacle Award. As Meetings Director of the National Solid Waste Management Association (now NWRA), Jeanne launched its first trade show in 1968 and managed it for 17 years, building the show into one of the nation’s top expositions. After retiring in 1985, Jeanne served as Executive Secretary of NSWMA’s Detachable Container Association and volunteered for many church and other organizations, including Meals on Wheels, the Oxon Hill Food Pantry and Independence & Information for the Blind.
