efferson Vaughan Wright, known to family and friends as Jeff, died at his home in Edgewater, Maryland, on the morning of September 20, 2026, at the age of 71. Born in Washington, D.C., Jeff spent most of his life in Baltimore, where he built a life defined by family, friendship, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the world around him. He was the beloved husband of Denise and the devoted father of Alix and Katherine. Jeff was an accomplished litigator who spent more than 35 years at Miles & Stockbridge in Baltimore, where he served as Chair of the Litigation Department, a member of the firm’s Board of Directors and Management Committee, and the firm’s first General Counsel. He was an exceptional trial lawyer and trusted advisor, but was equally proud of the colleagues and lasting friendships he formed throughout his career. After more than three decades at M&S, Jeff embraced a new chapter as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Telos Corporation. A motto he adopted during his years at M&S—“work hard, have fun and be good to your friends”—became something of a personal philosophy, and captured much of what he valued most in both his career and his life. But work was never the most important thing to Jeff. He was relentlessly curious, with a lifelong fascination with people, history, politics, travel, language, and the world. He had a remarkable ability to carry on an intelligent conversation about almost any subject, and a gift for making people think deeply. He was opinionated but open-minded, and he enjoyed a good debate not simply to make his point, but because he genuinely wanted to understand another perspective. Jeff’s sharp sense of humor and extraordinary gift for storytelling were matched by an equally remarkable ability to listen. He could recall names, dates, and details with clarity, bringing a story to life with such energy that you felt as though you were there. He was generous with his time, particularly when someone needed help thinking through a problem or navigating one of life’s challenges. He had a deep and contagious joy for life, and a remarkable ability to make the people around him feel it too. Whether telling stories, listening to a friend, or simply enjoying the company around him, Jeff made people feel immediately comfortable, and he was the kind of person you wanted a seat next to at a wedding or even a funeral. He maintained friendships across every chapter of his life and made a point of staying in touch with the people he cared about. His influence extended well beyond his immediate family, and he was a mentor, trusted advisor, and father-like figure to many. Above all, Jeff was a deeply devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was openly and generously loving, never hesitant to tell the people closest to him how much they meant to him. He and Denise maintained a remarkable circle of family and friends, and their home was often a place where people gathered for parties, conversation, and Denise’s famously abundant dinner tables. Jeff had a gift for making people feel welcome and at home, and he particularly cherished time at the family’s home in Bethany Beach, which he built as a place for his family to enjoy for generations to come. For all of his accomplishments, he was happiest in the company of the people he loved. Jeff faced a serious illness in the final years of his life with remarkable resilience and optimism. Throughout that difficult period, he remained deeply connected to his family and friends and continued to find joy in the people and experiences around him. He approached even the most difficult circumstances with his characteristic curiosity, humor, and faith. Until the end, he remained engaged with the world and immensely grateful for the life he had lived. In one of his final reflections to his family, Jeff wrote: “My cup has been filled to the brim. I am eternally grateful to each of you for the joy you have brought to me in life. No man could ask for more.” Jeff is survived by his wife, Denise; his daughters, Alix Ekroth and Katherine Murray; his sons-in-law, Matt Ekroth and Palmer Murray; and his three grandchildren, Emma Murray, Will Murray, and Eden Ekroth. He is also survived by his brother, William Marshall Wright Jr.; his sister-in-law, Karen Webster Wright; and his nephews, Tristan and Peter Wright, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Marshall Wright and Mabel “Mickey” Johnson Wright. A celebration of Jeff's life will be held on Friday, October 30, 2026 at 11 am at the Greenspring Valley Hunt Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Delaware Center for Inland Bays and the Sarcoma Foundation of America in remembrance of Jefferson V. Wright.
