17yr. resident of Annapolis and a former resident of Fanwood, NJ for 20 years passed away on Friday February 15, 2008 at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore of complications from a serious fall. She was born May 22,1926 in Peoria, IL. She received her B.A degree in Journalism in 1948 from the University of Illinois and a Masters degree in English from Western Michigan University in 1965. She also completed many post graduate courses. She taught English and television production at Westfield High School in Westfield, NJ. She received a federal grant to start a television studio in the high school and was instrumental in developing a cable TV station for the school. She received numerous academic and journalistic awards. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, past commander of the Annapolis Power and Sail Squadron. She also served as a volunteer at the Annapolis visitor bureau. JoAnn was also very active in the Caritas Society at St. Johns College in Annapolis and a very active member of the Bates Senior Center in Annapolis. She was also a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and the New Annapolitans. She is survived by her loving husband John F. Gainer, III whom she married August 14, 1948, and her children John Gainer IV, of Kildeer, IL, Donna Jekel of Cape Coral, FL and Janice Donaghue of Silver Spring, MD. Also survived by one brother Robert and her late sister Mary, seven grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to JoAnn's Life Celebration on Monday February 18, 2008 from 3-5pm & 7-9pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, P.A. 2973 Solomons Island rd. Edgewater, MD 21037. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday February 19, 2008 at 10am at Calvary United Methodist Church 301 Rowe Blvd. Annapolis, MD 21401. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville, MD. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in JoAnn's name may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church 301 Rowe Blvd. Annapolis, MD 21401 or to the Annapolis Senior Center 119 S. Villa Ave. Annapolis, MD 21401.
